Curtain Size Chart: Standard Lengths and Widths
Every standard ready-made curtain length and width in inches and centimeters, which length suits which room, and the curtain width and panel count for common window sizes.

Ready-made curtains come in a handful of standard lengths and panel widths. Choosing the right size comes down to two measurements: where your rod is (for length) and how long the rod is (for width).
Standard curtain lengths
| Length | In cm | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 63 in | 160 cm | Sill or apron length; kitchens, bathrooms, small windows |
| 84 in | 213 cm | Floor length with the rod just above a standard window (8 ft ceilings) |
| 95 in | 241 cm | Floor length with the rod hung higher, or near an 8 ft ceiling |
| 96 in | 244 cm | Same as 95 in; brands use one or the other |
| 108 in | 274 cm | Floor length for 9 ft ceilings, or a rod near a 9 ft ceiling |
| 120 in | 305 cm | 10 ft ceilings, two-story rooms, tall windows |
Curtain length is measured from the rod to the hem. To pick one, measure from your rod to ½ inch above the floor and choose the nearest standard length, then raise or lower the rod slightly to match. The guide to how high to hang curtains shows the rod heights for 8, 9 and 10 ft ceilings.
Standard curtain widths
| Panel width | In cm | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 38–42 in | 97–107 cm | Narrow panels, often sheers or tab tops |
| 50 in | 127 cm | The most common single panel |
| 52–54 in | 132–137 cm | Common for grommet and blackout panels |
| 100 in and up | 254 cm and up | Extra-wide panels or pairs sold as one |
Widths are measured flat. For a full look, all your panels together should be about 2 times the rod length (1.5× for a flat look, 2.5–3× for pleats and sheers).
Curtain sizes for common windows
With the rod extending 10 inches past each side and 2× fullness:
| Window width | Rod | Total curtain width | 50 in panels | 54 in panels |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 36 in | 56 in | 112 in | 4 | 4 |
| 48 in | 68 in | 136 in | 4 | 4 |
| 60 in | 80 in | 160 in | 4 | 4 |
| 72 in | 92 in | 184 in | 4 | 4 |
| 96 in | 116 in | 232 in | 6 | 6 |
Panel counts are rounded up to an even number so each side gets the same. If the count looks high, one pair of extra-wide panels does the same job.
Metric curtain sizes
Outside the US, curtains are usually sold in centimeters, and sizes vary by country and store. In the UK, for example, common ready-made drops (lengths) are 137, 183 and 229 cm (54, 72 and 90 in), with widths from about 117 to 229 cm. Always check the store’s own size chart. To convert any size, use inches to cm or cm to inches.
Find your exact size
Every window is different. The curtain size calculator works out the length, width, panel count and rod size from your own measurements, and how to measure for curtains shows how to take them. Updating the walls too? The board and batten calculator helps plan an accent wall around the window.
Frequently asked questions
What are the standard curtain lengths?
In the US, ready-made curtains come in 63, 84, 95, 96, 108 and 120 inch lengths (160, 213, 241, 244, 274 and 305 cm). 84 and 95/96 inches are the most common, because they fit floor-length curtains in rooms with 8-foot ceilings.
What is the standard width of a curtain panel?
Most single panels are 50 to 54 inches wide, measured flat. Some brands sell 38–42 inch panels and extra-wide panels of 100 inches or more. Always check the package, and add up the panels to get the total width.
What size curtains for a 60 inch window?
A 76–84 inch rod (the window plus 8–12 inches each side) and about 160 inches of curtain width at 2× fullness: four 50-inch panels or three 54-inch panels rounded up to four. For floor length in a room with 8-foot ceilings, 84-inch curtains.
Are 84 or 96 inch curtains better?
It depends on the rod height. 84-inch curtains reach the floor when the rod is about 84½ inches up, just above a standard window. 96-inch curtains need the rod about 96½ inches up, so they suit 9-foot ceilings or a rod hung near an 8-foot ceiling.
