FAQ

Frequently asked questions

1 mm is 0.03937 inches, about 1/25 of an inch. It takes 25.4 mm to make one inch.

Inches = millimeters ÷ 25.4. For example, 50 mm ÷ 25.4 = 1.9685 inches.

10 mm is 0.3937 inches, which is closest to 3/8 inch (0.375 in) on a ruler marked in sixteenths. The difference is under 0.5 mm.

Open the mm ruler, calibrate it with a bank card and hold the object against the edge of the screen. Each small line is 1 mm.

Exactly 25.4 mm. The inch has been defined as 25.4 millimeters since 1959, so 1/2 inch is 12.7 mm and 1/4 inch is 6.35 mm.

No, much smaller. An inch is 25.4 times longer than a millimeter. One millimeter is a little thicker than a credit card (0.76 mm) and a little thinner than a US dime (1.35 mm).

Divide by 25.4, multiply by 16 and round to a whole number: that's the number of sixteenths. For 5 mm: 5 ÷ 25.4 × 16 = 3.15, so about 3/16 inch. The converter above does this for you.

3 mm ≈ 1/8 in (0.118), 6 mm ≈ 1/4 in (0.236), 10 mm ≈ 3/8 in (0.394), 13 mm ≈ 1/2 in (0.512), 19 mm ≈ 3/4 in (0.748) and 25 mm ≈ 1 in (0.984).

On a metric ruler each small line is 1 mm, the slightly longer line halfway between numbers is 5 mm, and each numbered line is a centimeter (10 mm). Count the centimeters, multiply by 10 and add the small lines: 3 cm plus 4 lines is 34 mm.
