How to measure your foot for shoe size

Shoe sizes are based on foot length. Measure in the evening, when feet are largest, wearing the socks you'll wear with the shoes. Measure both feet and use the longer one.

How to use it

  1. Put a sheet of paper against a wall and stand on it with your heel touching the wall.
  2. Mark the tip of your longest toe, keeping the pen upright, or ask someone to mark it.
  3. Measure from the edge of the paper to the mark and enter the length above.

Good to know

  • Each whole US or UK size is 1/3 inch (8.5 mm) of foot length; each EU size is 2/3 cm.
  • For the same foot, US women's sizes are about 1 size larger than men's (some brands use 1½).
  • Japan sizes are your foot length in centimeters.
  • EU sizes measure the shoe's last, about 2 cm longer than the foot: EU ≈ 1.5 × (foot length in cm + 2).
  • Brands differ by up to half a size, so check the brand's own chart when you can.

Guide

Three ways to calibrate

1

Auto-detect your device

The ruler recognizes about 130 phones, tablets, laptops and monitors, including iPhones, Galaxy phones, Pixels and MacBooks.

2

Enter your screen size

Enter your screen's diagonal size (for example, 15.6" for a laptop), and the ruler works out the scale from your screen resolution.

3

Calibrate with a bank card

Hold any bank card against the outline on screen and move the slider until they match. Bank cards are the same size everywhere: 85.60 × 53.98 mm.

Accuracy

How accurate is the ruler?

How accurate the ruler is depends on how well it knows your screen's pixel density, meaning how many pixels fit in an inch. There are three ways to set it, from most to least accurate:

Bank card (±0.5%): Bank and credit cards are made to one worldwide size, 85.60 × 53.98 mm (ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1). Because every card is exactly the same, matching one on screen gives the most accurate result.

Auto-detect (±1%): The ruler looks up your device's published screen size and resolution. Screens of the same model can differ very slightly, so this is a little less exact. It covers about 130 devices.

Screen size (±2%): You type in your screen size, and the ruler works out the rest from your resolution. Advertised sizes are rounded (a "15.6-inch" screen may really be 15.59 inches), so this is the least exact method. It's a good fallback when you don't have a card.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Measure your foot from the back of the heel to the tip of the longest toe and enter it above. For US adult sizes, the standard formula is men's size ≈ 3 × foot length in inches − 22, and women's size ≈ 3 × foot length − 21.

A 10-inch (25.4 cm) foot is about a US men's 8, US women's 9, UK 7 and EU 41.

Standing, with your weight on the foot, because feet spread under load. Measure late in the day and use the longer foot.

Choose the larger size. For running and hiking shoes, many people go up another half size because feet swell during long activity.

A US men's 9 is about EU 42½ and UK 8, for a foot about 26.2 cm (10⅓ in) long. Nike labels it EU 42.5 and adidas EU 42⅔. See the chart below, or open any size for its Nike and adidas equivalents.

Each brand builds its own lasts and publishes its own chart, so the same US size can differ by half to one EU size between brands. When in doubt, go by your foot length in cm.

US kids' sizes run from 0C to 13½C for toddlers and little kids, then start again at 1Y to 7Y for big kids. Children's feet grow quickly, so measure every few months.
