How long is the orange bar?
How to read a ruler in inches
- Find the last whole number the bar passes. That's the whole inches.
- Look at the line where the bar ends. The longest line between numbers is ½, the next ¼, then ⅛, and the shortest 1/16.
- Count the marks from the whole number, in the smallest step you need, and simplify: 6/16 = 3/8.
| Line length | Means | Readings it marks |
|---|---|---|
| Longest (numbered) | Whole inch | 1, 2, 3 … |
| Second longest | Half inch | ½ |
| Middle | Quarter inch | ¼, ¾ |
| Short | Eighth inch | ⅛, ⅜, ⅝, ⅞ |
| Shortest | Sixteenth inch | 1/16, 3/16, 5/16 … 15/16 |

Frequently asked questions
How do you practice reading a ruler?
Start with whole and half inches, then quarters, eighths and sixteenths. For each length, find the last whole number the bar passes, then count the small marks after it. The quiz above draws a new bar each time and explains every answer.
What is the hardest part of reading a ruler?
Sixteenths, because the marks are close together and the answer has to be simplified: 10/16 is written 5/8. Look at the length of the mark first: the longer the line, the simpler the fraction.
Is this quiz good for kids and classrooms?
Yes. The easy level only uses halves and quarters, and the score resets when you change level, so students can work up one step at a time. For printed practice, use the ruler worksheets.
How do I read centimeters and millimeters?
Each numbered line is a centimeter, and the 10 small spaces between them are millimeters. A bar that ends 4 small marks after 7 is 7.4 cm, or 74 mm.
