    Frequently asked questions

How do I add inch fractions?

Turn the fractions into the same bottom number, add the tops, then carry whole inches. 3/8 + 11/16 = 6/16 + 11/16 = 17/16 = 1 1/16 inch. With feet, add the inches first and carry every 12 inches to the feet.

How do I subtract feet and inches?

    Subtract the inches first; if the top number is smaller, borrow 12 inches from the feet. 6' 2 1/4" − 2' 7 1/2" = 5' 14 1/4" − 2' 7 1/2" = 3' 6 3/4".

How do I divide a board into equal parts?

Divide the length by the number of parts. A 47 3/8 inch shelf split into 3 equal spaces is 15 19/24 in, about 15 13/16 inch each. Use the ÷ option above and choose a number, not a length, for the second value.

    What does nearest 1/16 mean?

Most US tape measures mark sixteenths of an inch, so answers are rounded to the closest 1/16 (0.0625 in, about 1.6 mm). Choose 1/32 or 1/64 for machining and woodworking that needs more precision.
