How to calculate square footage
- Measure the length and width with a tape measure, wall to wall, at floor level.
- Turn inches into feet by dividing by 12: 6 in = 0.5 ft, 9 in = 0.75 ft. The inches to feet converter does this for you.
- Multiply length × width. 12 ft × 14 ft = 168 sq ft.
- Split odd shapes into rectangles, triangles and circles, work out each one and add them. Subtract islands, built-in cabinets or a fireplace hearth if you're buying flooring.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate square footage?
Measure the length and width in feet and multiply them. A room 12 ft by 14 ft is 12 × 14 = 168 square feet. For an L-shaped room, split it into two rectangles, work out each one and add them together.
How do I calculate square feet with inches?
Turn the inches into a decimal of a foot by dividing by 12, then multiply. 10 ft 6 in is 10.5 ft, so a room 10 ft 6 in by 12 ft 3 in is 10.5 × 12.25 = 128.6 sq ft. Or multiply in inches and divide by 144: 126 × 147 ÷ 144 = 128.6.
How do I find the square footage of a house?
Add up the square footage of every finished, heated room, measured to the inside of the walls, or measure the outside of the house and multiply length by width for each floor. Appraisers in the US usually measure the outside walls and leave out garages, unfinished basements and porches.
How many square feet is a 12x12 room?
144 square feet, which is 16 square yards or about 13.4 m². Add 5 to 10% when you buy flooring or tile, for cuts and waste.
How do I convert square feet to square yards?
Divide by 9, because a yard is 3 feet and 3 × 3 = 9. 180 square feet ÷ 9 = 20 square yards, the unit carpet is often sold in.
