    How to calculate cubic yards

    1. Put every measurement in feet. Inches ÷ 12, yards × 3, meters × 3.281. 4 inches = 0.333 ft.
    2. Multiply length × width × depth to get cubic feet. 10 × 10 × 0.333 = 33.3 cu ft.
    3. Divide by 27. 33.3 ÷ 27 = 1.23 cubic yards.
    4. For a cylinder, use 3.1416 × radius² × depth instead of length × width × depth.

Need the area first? Use the square footage calculator; then cubic yards = square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate cubic yards?

    Multiply length × width × depth, all in feet, to get cubic feet, then divide by 27. A space 10 ft long, 10 ft wide and 6 inches (0.5 ft) deep is 10 × 10 × 0.5 = 50 cubic feet, and 50 ÷ 27 = 1.85 cubic yards.

How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?

    27. A cubic yard is a cube 3 feet on each side, and 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 cubic feet. It's also 46,656 cubic inches or 0.765 cubic meters.

How much area does a cubic yard cover?

It depends on the depth: 324 square feet at 1 inch, 162 sq ft at 2 inches, 108 sq ft at 3 inches, 81 sq ft at 4 inches and 54 sq ft at 6 inches.

How do I convert cubic feet to cubic yards?

Divide by 27. 100 cubic feet ÷ 27 = 3.7 cubic yards. To go the other way, multiply cubic yards by 27.

How many cubic yards fit in a pickup truck?

A full-size pickup with an 8 ft bed holds about 2 to 3 cubic yards of light material like mulch, but heavy materials are limited by weight: usually half to one cubic yard of soil or gravel, and about half a yard of wet concrete. Check your truck's payload rating.
