Weights are the US Mint's specifications. Worn coins weigh a little less, so a large batch can count a coin or two short; round up when in doubt. Sizes, thickness and edges are in the US coin sizes guide.
How to count coins by weight
- Sort the coins by type. Mixed change can't be valued by weight.
- Zero the scale with the empty bowl on it, or weigh the bowl and enter it above.
- Weigh each type and enter the weight. Grams give the most accurate count.
- Divide by one coin's weight for the count: 1,000 g of quarters ÷ 5.670 g = 176 quarters = $44.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a pound of quarters worth?
About $20. A quarter weighs 5.670 grams, so a pound (453.6 g) holds about 80 quarters. A pound of dimes is also worth about $20, because a dime weighs 2.268 g, exactly 2/5 of a quarter, for 2/5 of the value.
How much is a pound of pennies worth?
About $1.81 for pennies made since 1982 (2.5 g each, about 181 per pound), or about $1.46 for older copper pennies (3.11 g). A jar of mixed-date pennies falls in between.
How many coins are in a roll?
Standard bank rolls hold 50 pennies ($0.50), 40 nickels ($2), 50 dimes ($5), 40 quarters ($10), 20 half dollars ($10) and 25 dollar coins ($25).
Can I count mixed coins by weight?
Not accurately: a pound of mixed change could be worth $2 or $20 depending on the mix. Sort the coins first, then weigh each kind. Dimes and quarters are worth about $20 per pound, nickels about $4.54 and pennies about $1.81.
